Got To Love Nick and Torii

Picture from Startribune.com published 8/29/07

Yes, I know.  The Twins have lost two in a row to the Indians. Whatever. I'm much like my sister where my glass is half full and not half empty.  I'm very sad to see their chances of playoff baseball circling the drain but I would rather dwell on the positive and not the negative.

That play Nick made last night was just OFF THE HOOK!!!!  We've seen him make awesome plays like that all season long but that one was just, WOW!  Some people will say, Well, he's only hitting .200." To them I say, "Blah blah blah."  I stand by my theory that it is as important to save runs as it is to score them. Not to mention that is very worthy of being on a highlight reel.

So was Torii's catch last night when he slammed up against the wall. Ouch! I didn't see it happen but I saw it later on the news and I watched it on the internet as well.  Twice.  I'm thankful that he didn't break, sprain or strain anything.  I bet he has a heck of a bruise from it.

You rock, Torii and Nick!

The Minnesota Twins website had an article about Nick today.  It is a good read!  Click on the link if you would like to read it.  You know want to!

Nick Punto!!

Nick Punto, the baseball hero of the night!!!

Twins 2  Rangers 1  10 innings

My poor little baseball loving heart broke a little when Nick struck out with the bases loaded in the 7th inning.  I'm very glad that he got another chance in the 10th inning. When he hit that ball I thought, "Cool! A double." Then he went crusing around 2nd so fast that right before he reached 3rd base his helmet fell off.  I was so excited!  They were showing Cuddy and Mike Redmond on the top stair of the dugout cheering loudly for him. These guys are the epitome what a team should be.

Next batter: Joey Mauer.  I was hoping for a sac fly or a bloop singe that would allow Nick to score from 3rd base.  Turns out Joey didn't need to do a thing!  A wild pitch that rolled away from the catcher was all the Twins needed. Joey stood there and motioned for Nick to run home.  After that all Joey had to do was get out of the way so Nick could tag home plate. Game over!

Yes, the offense is still struggling so that wild pitch was just the break the Twins needed to win the game. A win is a win no matter what. But this was an exciting win. I think this is just as remarkable as when Torii walked home the winning run over Memorial Day weekend when the White Sox were in town.

I'd like to give mad props to Carlos Silva. He pitched a heck of a great game, giving up just that solo home run.  He has proved that he belongs in the Twins starting rotation.  Up tonight: Boof! I hope that the winning streak will go from 3 games to 4.

This is unrelated to the game but noteworthy, at least to me. Our sister Andrea is not a fan of baseball, but much to her dismay since she is in a family that loves it she has to hear about it all the time with Joe Mauer being one of the guys we talk about quite a bit.  I was talking to her on the phone last night and she told me that she did a Google image search because she didn't know what he looked like.  She said, "He is a good looking guy."  I know baseball will never be her thing but I'm impressed that she cared enough to do a little research.

How could anyone not love this guy?

Nick Punto

I love the Twins.  Anyone that reads our blog knows this. I like all of those guys very much but Nick Punto is my favorite!  He has a hard time behind the plate. He's doing the best he can so I'm not going to focus on that.  What has impressed me from the time he has first started with theTwins is how hard he plays.  If a fly ball is hit to him he'll do whatever he needs to do to catch it. I've seen him take some nasty falls into the dugout but he hangs onto it for the out!  I've also seen Nicky on many times turn some wicked double plays. He plays hard and will do whatever he needs to help the Twins win.  What I really think is awesome about him is that despite all the problems he has batting he doesn't take it on the field with him and plays outstanding defense. Saving runs from scoring is as key as key as scoring runs yourself!  I hope the Twins hang onto him for as long as he wants to play. There aren't that many guys that you can play at 2nd, 3rd and at shortstop with the same outstanding results. This guy is awesome.

Everyone have a good night and enjoy the game!
