Up next, the Yankees...

Twins 5, Royals 1

The Twins swept the Royals in a three game series, but of course we all know that.  Now that the Twins are leaving Kansas City, I want the Royals to go win some games. I know they're all major league athletes making a lot of money, but it would still stink to go to work and lose every day.  Blech.  The fans deserve better too.  All the people we met at last September at Kaufmann Stadium and on the bus back to the hotel after the game were so friendly.  I want the Royals to win some games for them!

Kevin Slowey pitched an amazing game yesterday.  I wish he could've gotten the complete game shut-out, but it was not to be.  I swear, I don't know where the Twins find all these young stud pitchers, but I am glad they do.  I'm starting to feel a little bad for Boof! though.  I hope that his fellow pitchers inspire him to do better.  Come on, Boof!  We know you can do it.  We're pulling for you here.

**Cue ominous music**  The Yankees are coming to town.  We must always, always take the Yankees seriously.  It doesn't matter if they're in the middle of a 200 game losing streak.  They are capable, at any given time, of thoroughly humiliating any team and making them look like little leaguers.  I hope the Twins don't let that fate befall them.

I was watching the Best Damn Sports Show Period last night when I should've been sleeping.  They showed a clip of Gary Matthews, then with the Texas Rangers, steal a home run away from the batter.  I mean, he must have leaped about 8 feet off the ground to catch that, and then he reached his arm over the fence.  It was cool.  Who was he stealing it from?  Mike Lamb, when he played for the Astros in 2006.  Lamb got a look on his face like, (pardon my French) holy shit, are you kidding me? After that he smiled.  He didn't do anything crabby like throw his bat on the ground or swear (out loud).  I guess sometimes you just have to give the outfielder his due for making a phenomenal catch, and figure better luck next time.  I like the way he handled that while the camera was on him.  He seems like a cool guy, and I think his defense at 3rd has been better than we expected.

I await the series vs. the Evil Empire on pins and needles.

Never Give Up!

Twins 9  Royals 8....10 innings

Holy cow! I did NOT see that coming. I sorta paid attention to the game tonight. I ran some errands after work and watched some other stuff on TV. I thought I'd tune in for the top of the 9th just to see the Twins through to the end of the game because I'm not a fair weather fan.

I fully expected the Royals to win 8-3. After the first two runners scored to make it 8-5 with Craig Monroe coming up to bat I gave the game 100% of my attention.

Top of the 9th, 2 outs with a full count. And he launches that ball into left field. Pow! Tie game!  I thought, no freaking way! I was shocked as I was last night, but in a GOOD way!!

I can't stop using explanation point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point I called Tricia and it rolled right into her voicemail. Damn! My message was something like, "Craig Monroe just tied the game. I really hope you saw it!" She called me back almost right away. She didn't, but that's ok because they showed it like 20 more times.

Our conversation then turned silly:
Me: Justin will be the first one up to bat in the 10th. I sent him a text message telling him to hit a home run.
Her: Really? What did he say?
Me: He wrote back and said that he would.
Her: You've had his cell number this whole and you haven't told me?
Me: He told me not to.

Then Justin DID hit a home run! Just like I "told" him to. HA! Sweet! (And on the first pitch!)  The Royals were able to get 3 outs without any trouble after that. No matter, Joe Nathan came in closed the game, giving the Twins a very unlikely win and handing the Royals their 10th loss in a row.  Ouch.  There will be some Royal fans losing sleep tonight.

This is why you never, ever give up on your team!  Until that last out is recorded, ANYTHING can happen!  Don't you just love baseball?

What the Heck??

Twins 4, Royal 3, 12 Innings

That was one weird game.  Ugh.  I mean, it turned out ok since the Twins won, but ugh all the same. An inside the park home run feels worse than a big shot into the right field seats.  It seems the overall consensus is that Delmon Young screwed up big time.  First he played it wrong and then he kind of jogged to go get the ball, hoping the ump would call it foul.  Well, how should Gardy deal with this?  Clearly he can't get let Delmon get off scott free.

*String him upside down in the clubhouse by his ankles.
*Subject him to an endless lecture about he might think he's hot stuff, but he doesn't know everything, all recited in pig latin.
*Make him take batting practice all by himself.
*Bench him for a couple of days and let Kubel or Monroe take over in left field.  Yeah...that's probably the most logical idea.

Right after Nick Blackburn went into the dugout to exchange high fives with his teammates, Kevin Slowey pulled on his shirt to get him closer, got a sly smile on his face, and started whispering in his ear.  I was almost positive Kevin was going to give Nick a big fat smooch right on the lips.  I know....I'm weird, but that's what it looked like to me.  I would really like to know what Kevin said.

------

I am REALLY glad we weren't home on Sunday.   My husband, Twins Kid and I live in Coon Rapids, and one of our neighbors told us she saw a tornado go right over her head that just didn't touch down. (I don't know why she wasn't cowering in the tub with a mattress over her head, but I guess that's another story.) Gulp.  It's nothing, nothing like the destruction in Hugo.  I can't imagine how terrible that was.  Still, we're pretty sure a tornado was actually on the ground just a few blocks away.  There's no way ordinary wind would uproot a 50 foot pine tree.  Our house is fine, and actually, none of the houses in the neighborhood got more than minor damage, but how scary is that, to have a tornado land a block from your front door?

Back to work.  Gotta audit more files and answer more phone calls.  Yippee.  Maybe I'd rather get chewed out for not making a play in left field.  I hear the money's better, in any case.

Hugsies

I'll tell ya.....

Right now I want to reach right into my TV and give Nick Blackburn a great big hug. He looks so dejected.  He pitched like an ace and probably thought like I did that Joe Nathan would throw a few pitches and the game would be done.

Inside the park home runs make my tummy hurt.

I'm not even mad at Joe Nathan. I think he needs a big hug, too.

I just turned off my TV. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Two Months In

We are about 2 months into the Twins season.  I thought I'd share some of my favorite moments thus far:

Opening Day, Carlos Gomez's first day as our new Twins center fielder. No wonder how he earned the nickname "Go Go" so quickly.

Mike Lamb's game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th inning against the Boston Red Sox. Fantastic come from behind win.

Michael Cuddyer's catch off his hat. This makes me laugh every single time I see it. It probably always will.

Slamming Day

Twins 6  Tigers 1

There. That's more like it. Glen Perkins earned his second victory in as many starts and the Twins played the way we know they can.

I didn't see it, but Jason Kubel hit a grand slam. Watch. It was pretty amazing. Go-Go, Joey and Justin were waiting to greet him as he crossed home plate.

No Twins baseball tomorrow. On Tuesday they start a three game series with the Royals.

Happy Memorial Day!

Ouch and Yikes!

Twins 3  Tigers 19

I was looking forward to this game. I had spent the day making cookies and then going for a super long bike ride with some friends.  I have not been on a bike ride in a very long time so it was pretty stupid of me to go on such a long one. Here's the route: Just south of downtown all the way to Minnehaha Falls. From there over to Lake Nokomis to Lake Harriet and then back to just south of Downtown Minneapolis. Ouch!

So there I was, all stiff and sore but in a good mood and ready to watch the game.  Then the ass kicking began. I quit watching right after they took Boof! out in the 4th, hoping that would be the end of the beat down of my team. Not! When I checked the score in the top of the 7th it was 19 to 3.

Cue the Scrubs DVD. I'm not a fair weather fan but I'm not a glutton for punishment, either. At that point Gardy had taken Justin and Joey out for Howie Clark and Mike Redmond. Since the game was a lost cause I guess he wanted to save his superstar hotties for today.

Today's a new day. With a win today they can still head to Kansas City having won 2 out of 3 from the Tigers.

Kevin Slowey's First Win Of The Year

I looked all over and I just couldn't find a picture of Mike Lamb in a Twins uniform, other than his main photograph in his player bio. I thought he deserved something better after his home run, triple and walks from last night.

Twins 9  Tigers 4

I only started watching in the 7th inning. I went out for dinner and ice cream with my younger sister Andrea.  At that point it was 5-0 and the Tigers were coming up to bat. First thing I saw was a lead off double. Andrea said, "It is only one hit." I said, "Yeah, but this is how big innings start so we'll see."

The 4 runs was all the damage the Tigers inflicted, but I'll tell you, that was plenty. I was having flashbacks to those games they lost to the Tigers earlier this season when they blew big leads late in the game.

The Twins got those 4 runs back in the 8th and 9th innings. Cool! Congrats to Kevin Slowey for getting his first win of the year. He pitched 6 shut out innings--fantastic!

Back to Mike Lamb. I really like him. I hear he is sarcastic and has an odd sense of humor. I think that's pretty cool. He's also getting timely hits and playing outstanding defense. I was not sure about him at the start of the season but I'm glad he's here!

I'm going on a nice long bike ride today with some friends so I doubt I'll see much of today's game. That's ok because I think I need to give myself a small break because I get so worked up over it.

Happy Thoughts

Wednesday:  Rangers 10, Twins, Not A Shutout to Ponson
Thursday:  Rangers 8, Twins 7, 10 Innings

Honestly, I prefer to forget these past two games, so my suggestion to us all is to think of something happy.  You know, like a long walk on the beach, someone sending you flowers, a really delicious meal that someone else cooks and cleans up after.  Insert your own happy thought here.

There, I feel better.  Do you?

Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend.  May the sun shine,

may the flowers bloom,

and may the birds sing.

And So It Goes...

Wednesday:  Twins 1  Rangers 10
Thursday: Twins 7 Rangers 8  in 10 innings

I don't know what suprised me more last last night:
--The Twins were defeated so horribly or that David Cook won on American Idol. I thought it would be Cute Lil' David Archuleta for sure. I like them both, so whatever.

WHAT was going on with the defense last night? I was ahocked to how sloppy they were playing.  The Twins are all about defense. Nick Blackburn was pitching just fine. If Alexi Casilla had been able to at get one out I have to think it would have made a lot of difference.  It helped Sidney Ponson look good.  I'm sure I should be over it by now but I'm still harboring a small grudge about him.

I was at work today so all I know about today's game is that we lost in 10 innings, and that Go-Go hit a home run. He's getting to be a favorite of mine.

Up next: Weekend series with the Tigers.

Anyway, time for dinner and then I'm meeting some friends for ice cream. Yummy! Have a great night!
